Unwritten Constitutionalism Symposium

Unwritten constitutionalism and the range of research questions it raises is generating a new wave of discourse around the world. On September 19, the Centre for Constitutional Studies, the uOttawa Public Law Centre, the Unwritten Constitutional Norms and Principles Project and the Barton Chair, held by Philippe Lagassé, will host a symposium in Edmonton to explore various aspects of Canada’s unwritten Constitution, including constitutional principles, norms, and conventions, and the workings of the machinery of government. Professor Vanessa MacDonnell will be collaborating on this initiative with Dr. Richard Mailey, Seána Glennon and Professor Philippe Lagassé.

Book Launch and Fireside Chat with the Honourable Rosalie Silberman Abella

On September 25 at 5:00pm, the Université d'Ottawa Centre de Droit Public uOttawa Public Law Centre will host a fireside chat with Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella to mark the release of a new edited collection, entitled Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella: A Life of Firsts. The fireside chat will be held with Executive-in-Residence Stephen Bindman. Following that, we will convene a panel with a selection of chapter contributors, including Rosemary Cairns Way, Gerald Chan and Jamie Cameron. Please register and join us!

The Public Law Centre, in partnership with the Canadian Association for Food Law and Policy, is proud to host the 9th Annual Canadian Food Law and Policy Conference at the University of Ottawa, taking place October 23–24, 2025.

This year’s theme, “Made in Canada: Regulating Local Food in a Global World,” explores some of the most pressing legal and policy challenges facing Canada’s agricultural sector. Topics will include interprovincial trade barriers, tariffs and protectionism, the free movement of goods and people, and how governments can support local markets while navigating international trade obligations.
